If she\u2019s awake, she\u2019s lying. When you\u2019re not looking, she\u2019s stealing. Her anger is always on the prowl, seeking any whiff of a slight. She is high much of the time and when she\u2019s not, she\u2019s drunk. \u201cI have,\u201d she says, \u201cas many words for \u2018hangover\u2019 as an Inuit has for snow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.timporter.com\/seconddraft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GenerationLoss-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2255\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.timporter.com\/seconddraft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GenerationLoss-194x300.jpg 194w, http:\/\/www.timporter.com\/seconddraft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GenerationLoss-663x1024.jpg 663w, http:\/\/www.timporter.com\/seconddraft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GenerationLoss-768x1186.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.timporter.com\/seconddraft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GenerationLoss.jpg 971w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Cass was a star at age 20, famous for photographing the human detritus of the city\u2019s punk era: needles in arms, semi-public sex, and young bodies, dead from ODs on the streets. Three years later, her fame is flamed out. Emotionally cauterized by a rape, doped into stagnation, she can\u2019t make pictures anymore. And when she does try, she is told her images are both pass\u00e9 and overly violent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too raw,\u201d a gallery rep says. \u201cIt\u2019s too much like being right inside someone\u2019s head.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is inside someone\u2019s head,\u201d Cass answers. \u201cIt\u2019s the inside of my head.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rejected and angered, Cass retreats. Two decades later she remains sheltered &#8212; working in a bookstore stockroom, hiding out from everything but her rage \u2013 when an opportunity arrives via an old friend: a magazine assignment to interview and photograph a reclusive photographer, Aphrodite Kamestros, who published two books of dark, haunting images and then disappeared to an island off the coast of Maine. Cass is reluctant, but takes the job because Aphrodite\u2019s work was a guiding spirit of Cass\u2019s own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this point on Cass steps through the looking glass into a world where nothing is what, or who, it seems to be. Contrary to the Maine farmer\u2019s oft-quoted quip, \u201cyou can\u2019t get there from here,\u201d in Cass\u2019s version of Maine you can definitely get there, but you probably shouldn\u2019t go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heavy with colorful dialog, the story sprints through an obstacle course of missing persons, aging hippies, clannish townsfolk, and artists in the clutch of malevolent muses. With a few exceptions, it\u2019s all fun stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGeneration Loss\u201d has pretensions of being more than just a mystery \u2013 and it fulfills some of them when it describes the magic of seeing and making photographs (especially with film) \u2013 but it works just fine as a somewhat edgy, somewhat quirky whodunit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s not much to like about Cass Neary, the New York photographer who anchors this intriguing, uneven, but ultimately entertaining mystery of artistic crime.
