Don\u2019t live in the past. Everyone says that. Some things \u2013 and some people \u2013 are gone, though, and all that remains of them is the past. What are we to do with what is gone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dog stands vigilant<\/strong> in the late hour, a black shape in the darker night, watching who comes and who goes, a guardian of that moment in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He, un perro callejero<\/em>,<\/strong> and I, un<\/em> extranjero perdido<\/em>, share a blink of an instant. He ignores the camera, trusts me to betray him well in his duties. During the brevity of the open shutter, the dog makes a promise: Keep this image, hold tight this memory, and you will find what was lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sagacity arrives<\/strong> from unexpected sources, even from the salivating maw of a street dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was lost<\/strong> was love. What was lost was promise. What was lost was renewal and transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
